Your host aboard "OASIS" is Captain Julian, a British trained and qualified Master Mariner with over 35 years experience in the marine industry.
Captain Julian first started at sea back in 1973 when, as a kid, he grew up working on fishing boats in his home town of Falmouth in the South West of England.
He then joined the British Merchant Navy in 1978 and spent some 20 years working his way up through the ranks and finally gained his British Master Mariners Unlimited Certificate in 1996......
Here we have a picture taken in the Indian Ocean on board an 800 foot bulk carrier taking heavy seas during the SW monsoon of India on passage from Australia to Suez....
After about 10 years at sea, a different career approach was taken for a while...... This is a picture taken in Sumburgh, Orkney Islands way to the north of Scotland.... Employed with the Scottish fisheries as aircrew chasing and monitoring fishing operations around the Scottish waters....
Awesome job..... not so much on the money! The plane shown here is now actually sitting on the bottom of the ocean off the west coast of Scotland.... she crashed there during routine flight operations quite some years ago... Capt J had already left the job and the crew on board survived the crash...
This was a trip to the South Pacific on a 60 foot ketch ..... An amazing trip and that is where "Oasis" will go someday.... (Bit skinnier in those days!)
We crossed the Pacific in the SY "Polydeepsea", the burgundy coloured yacht you can see here through the trees on the remote atoll of "Suvarov" in the Cook Islands.....
This is Suvarov in the Cook Islands..... see the brown boat? That is a dug-out tree trunk and named the "Ave Maria" - the owner was making his way from Panama to Papua New Guinea to get back to his wife.... amazing story....
Polydeepsea's dinghy tender on a remote unspoiled beach in Tonga.... not a footprint in sight!
Then it was back to sea... and some 8 years spent as chief officer on container ships in the North Atlantic ocean.. probably one of the roughest oceans you'll come across.....
On board a 600 foot container ship in the Gulf of St Lawrence, Canada, after a rough, wet and very cold crossing and approximately 500 tonnes of ice on board... This ice built up on the ship in about 24 hours with force 11 winds, rough seas and in temperatures lower than - 30 degrees C!
This is a 25 meter wave about to roll in and crash against the ship during an Atlantic winter storm... this was reasonably common weather for a North Atlantic winter!
Sitting in amongst all the ice that we knocked off the containers. Here the ship is alongside a container terminal in Montreal City, Canada...
Over the years, Captain Julian has worked on nearly every type of vessel going and spent several years as a "tall-ship" captain working in the Caribbean.... This period includes both relief and full time master of the 90 meter sailing ship "Legacy"... Windjammer's flag ship after the tragic loss of the "Fantome" in 1998......
Sometimes the captains' duties were a little "unusual"! Here we are doing a wedding vow "renewal"
Or sometimes a little piracy was needed....
Hmmmmmmmmmmmmm!
Sailed as relief captain several times on the beautiful 65 meter schooner Yankee Clipper.....
Receiving an award from the US coastguard after a fairly lengthy rescue of two Canadians in the Florida Straits after they were in trouble in rough seas in their smoke filled sailing boat....
A stunning Mahe Mahe caught in the Bahamas....
Mate/relief captain on Le Grand Bleu, 105 meter explorer yacht - she had a sail boat almost the size as "Oasis" on her back deck... a total of 57 toys and tenders including a helicopter...
Mate on Midnight Saga, busy charter boat, can't say who we had as guests but one charterer was "Born in the USA" - say no more!
Relief captain on Reverie for a trans-Atlantic trip from Italy to Savannah......lovely boat!
One of my more prominent guests!
Driving the Haida G tender near Ponza, Italy...
Captain Julian is also a super-yacht captain, and has skippered some amazing yachts throughout his career.... one of the highlights was captain of the beautifully restored 1929 classic yacht Haida G that featured in the hit musical "Mamma Mia" back in 2008.....
A lovely photograph of Haida G. She was built in Germany in 1929.... and was beautifully restored by the owner at that time. We still operated with the original 1929 German Krupp diesels engines....
Here we are in Skiathos, Greece, prior to filming in Mamma Mia....
Alongside in Skopelos in the Greek Islands...
Skopleos, Greece, film crews and their transport....
The sundeck of Haida G transformed with the horrendous "flower-power" material used for the film.....
Shooting one of the film sequences for the "Money Money Money" song in "Mamma Mia"...
Same again, picture taken from the bow....
At anchor in Shipwreck Bay, Zakynthos, Greece... this bay has the most amazing colours as you can see...
More recent shots on a 70 meter yacht in Croatia 2012...
End of a successful season on the same 70 meter boat... alongside in Palma, Spain..
Dubrovnik, Croatia....
Sandy Lane Hotel library...
Driving the Oasis tender ashore.... lovely shot with Oasis in the background....
Nice 50lb Wahoo caught off St Lucia....
Enjoying a lovely sunset on board Oasis... somewhere off the coast of Grenada...
A nice little Tuna....
The catch of the season.... a 90 lb Kingfish caught off the North Coast of Grenada....
Can barely hold it up!
Enjoying Sandy Island, Carriacou....
And my favourite little island Morpion, off Petit St Vincent and with Carriacou in the background..
Taking a stroll in my "office"..... Morpion...
Captain Julian prefers the relaxing and casual environment of chartering and sailing in the Caribbean Islands, and has a great love of the sea, and takes great pleasure in sharing the delights of the ocean with all those who sail on board "Oasis".......
